The Tama River Water Resources Forest Team
~Restoration of private forests by volunteers~
To supply potable delicious water to our customers, Tokyo Metropolitan Waterworks Bureau has owned and managed vast areas of water conservation forests, which are in the upper basin of Tama River, for more than 100 years. On the other hand, private forests, approximately same area as the water conservation forests, are also located in the Tama River upper basin.
Some of these forests have not been well- maintained due to the decline of the forestry industry and other causes. Leaving these unkempt private forests may lead to soil erosion, and thus may have a negative impact on the water quality of rivers and reservoirs.
Therefore, Tokyo Metropolitan Waterworks Bureau established the “Tama River Water Resources Forest Team” in 2002 (Heisei 14), to regenerate those unkempt private forests into rich forests by volunteers’ conservation activities.
There are now over 1,000 registered members in the team, and the volunteers carry out conservation activities to regenerate areas into rich forests.
In addition, the team’s continuous action is highly appreciated both in Japan and abroad, and it has received the Honour East Asia Region Award for IWA Project Innovation Award 2014 (Category; Marketing/ Communication).
