Water Supply Facilities during Earthquakes
- Emergency Water Supply Stations -

The Bureau of Waterworks is working to implement various earthquake protection measures, such as replacing all pipes with earthquake-resist water pipes. Moreover, if the water supply is cut off by an earthquake or other natural disaster, the Bureau of Waterworks will supply water to the people in the affected service areas at “Emergency Water Supply Stations”. There are three types of Emergency Water Supply Station:

(1) Emergency Water Supply Station (Water Supply Point)

There is generally one of these stations located within a 2km radius of your home. There are 212 of these stations (Purification Plants, Water Supply Stations, Emergency Water Storage Tanks* etc.) in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area. You can check the location of your nearest Emergency Water Supply Station (Water Supply Point) by following the link below.

*Emergency water storage tanks are located beneath public parks and other open spaces. The water in these is continually kept fresh by circulating fresh water from the distribution pipes through the tank.

(2) Emergency Water Supply Stations (Vehicle Transportation)

The Bureau of Waterworks uses water trucks to transport water to locations, such as evacuation centers, that are a long way from the nearest Emergency Water Supply Station (Water Supply Point) and set up a Water Supply Station there.

(3) Water Supply Stations (Fire hydrants etc.)

In order to supplement the water supply provided by Emergency Water Supply Stations (Water Supply Points), temporary taps will be set up by wards, cities or towns at pre-designated fire hydrants in the vicinity of evacuation centers.
